No master pages applied error in Frame 10

I am generating a book and my TOC and Indexes are not formatting properly and I am getting a No master pages applied because no master pages exist error.

I have updated the UnstructMasterPageMaps table with all my paragraph tags but and I select the book and apply master pages using the Format menu - but the TOC and Index come in as plain list with no formatting.

Any ideas how I can get this rectified?

    Let's start by ruling out the obvious:

    You have master page mapping tables in the Reference pages of both the TOX.fm and IX.fm files.

    Are they by any chance calling out Master Page names that don't exist in the  TOC.fm and IX.fm files?

    Always a good idea - yes, the book, the TOC and the Index all have First, Left and Right master pages in them.

    In the console I have the error "one or more master pages do not exist. Aborting Apply Master Pages...  The Gill Sans MT Font is not available.

    I have never seen a missing font cause an error like this -

    What master pages would it be looking for?

    In the console I have the error "one or more master pages do not  exist. Aborting Apply Master Pages...  The Gill Sans MT Font is not  available. I have never seen a missing font cause an error like this -

    Nor have I. I'm inclined to think that's a separate problem from the Apply Master Pages (AMP) issue.

    What master pages would it be looking for?

    In my experience, the usual causes of unexpected AMP errors are:

    • MP is declared (in mapping table)  and invoked by paragraphs, but is not present in the current .fm file (which you have ruled out)
    • MP is declared, but not invoked by any paragraph, but it still has to be present in the .fm file
    • subtle errors in MP names or mapping table declarations, such as: upper and lower case, trailing blanks

    I might add that I no longer elect:

  • Apply Master Pages

    when performing an Edit > Update Book

    In FM 7.1/Solaris, it frequently fails to correctly apply MPs. I don't know if this is fixed in later FM versions.

    I do Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages in the component .fm file.

    There's also the corner case of MP assignment causing the controlling pgf to move off the page.
