Opening FM 7 file in FM 8

Can I simply open the FM 7 files in FM 8 or I have to convert it from FM 7 to FM 8? I have a lot of FM 7 files in many languages (Japanese, Greek, Hungarian, Chinese etc.) so I would like to use the Unicode support of FM 8 in my files. How could I start it with FM 8.

Many thanks

Eva

Yes, just select the file and Open.
You're asked if you want to update the file format of a 7 file to 8.

Thanks, Art,

And if I do that, and save the FM 8 files as mif, and open the mif files in any text editor (Notepad or Texpad), I will see the characters in unicode?

Hi, Eva,
You'll need to have a unicode-aware text editor in order to see the characters correctly -- UltraEdit is one that comes highly recommended, and there are many others, too. TextPad and Notepad aren't unicode-aware (unless maybe Notepad on Vista is).

Thank you Sheila,

Where can I have any Unicode-aware text editor that can open our FM 8 mif files?

This screenshot shows doing searches in Chinese (I think) characters:

Eva:

For Windows, I rather like Notedpad++:

http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php

Currently version 4.5, supported Unicode in version 2.4.

Be sure to check out all the plug-ins. If you have the plug-ins' .zip files in the same directory as the Notepad++ installation program, they'll bet installed and configured at the time of installation...

Cheers & hope this helps,
Riley

P.S. I like Notepad++ so much that under Linux I run it under Wine...

Hello,
we just update to FM8 and have a great problem!
We also have only FM 7.2 data (as many others,I think!). If we produce a PDF via the book-option it isn't possible because the files are saved in FM 7.2!
Is there any solution or workaround? Shall we install the patches?
We use FM 8.0p236.
Thanks
Hans Froehlich

Hans,

All the files in the book must be opened at least once. When they are opened, they are converted to FM 8 (you are asked if this is OK).
At that point, you can generate a PDF. It's up to you whether you then save the files as FM 8 format or not -- if you abandon the updated file, you'll need to convert them each time you work on them.

If I were you, I'd make a backup copy of the FM 7 files for the archives. Then roll the files forward to FM 8 and go on with life.

And yes, of course, apply the patches. But the patches don't have anything to do with the problem.
