Opening saved Lightweight DITA topic file resets all paragraph styles

When I edit and update a paragraph style in a Lw DITA topic document, close and save the file, and then reopen it, the paragraph style no longer has my changes. Similarly, if I create a custom paragraph style, it is no longer available when I re-open the file. What am I missing here?

When you open an xml or dita file with FrameMaker, it uses a template specified in the structapps.fm file. To make permanent format changes, you need to edit the template that FrameMaker is using.

This is expected behavuiour 
Dita doesn't have any formatting of itself  but FM provides input and output templates where you can customise your style and formatting .
