Shift + Enter in new FrameMaker

Community Beginner ,

Hi there!

If I use Shift+Enter in older versions of Adobe FrameMaker to insert a forced return within a fully justified paragraph, the line that ends with the forced return is not justified. Like this:

Now I have v17 of FrameMaker installed. This version leaves the lines with Shift+Enter fully justified. Like this:

How could I get legacy behaviour of forced return with lines aligned left like in older versions of FrameMaker?

Hi,

In maker.ini there is this setting:

;Apply the Justify Alignment on lines ending with Shift+Enter
DoJustifyOnEOL=On

You should check, if this makes a difference.

Copy this line from the general maker.ini in c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker 2022\maker.ini to your local maker.ini in c:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\17\maker.ini

Yes. But how to get "broken" line inside one ¶ without voodoo with different types of spaces?

Until the bug is fixed, keyboard shortcut ␛jl
or the button for that, restores left justification.
And yes, if other users can reproduce it, I consider it a bug. Full justification is rarely justified, so to speak.

!jl aligns to the left all lines in paragraph. But I need to align left only lines with forced return, others -- fully justified.

I rarely use justified paragraphs in my work so I haven't encountered this yet. I am trying to decide if this is a feature or a bug. I am curious too if this is documented somewhere. In any case, Adobe should provide a paragaph format setting that would allow you to choose which behavior you want.

Is there a reason why you don't use separate paragraphs instead? This would be the simplest solution in light of the unwanted soft-return behavior.

Annotation is logically one paragraph. I use semi-automated layout with "Next Paragraph Tag" option and long tag chains. So multiple ¶'s of same tag in a row breaks my automation. FrameMaker have no option to ignore Space Above and Below ¶'s if they was of the same tag, so I get one plus operation in my work (Space Between Paragraphs).
Besides that, I fill out PubMed and other referral DBs with my journals by exporting them to xml. Having unpredicted number of tags is not good idea for these bases.
