Hello,
Using a fresh install of Framemaker 7.04. Before reinstalling recently, I never noticed the following problem.
When I create a PDF, some symbols are lost (they appear as a default character), others (the O with a line) are okay:
(In this chart, all symbols except epsilon (the last one) appear to be in Times font. The epsilon is in Symbol font.)
if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, I will be very grateful. Thank you in advance. (By the way, I am a Frame novice so specifics are appreciated.)

p.s. this is on Vista, if that matters.

PintaBear,
Distiller on your machine apparently has no access to the Symbol font. The Ø (often used as an abbreviation for »diameter«) is a regular letter (O slash) used primarily in Scandinavian languages.
Check your systems font folder is it contains Symbol.ttf.
If you have a Symbol font elsewhere, check the font folder listing in Distiller to make sure that folder is included in the list.

Thank you, Michael.
Symbol.ttf is in Windows\Fonts.
And Distiller Font Locations shows Windows\Fonts as the first location.
It's a mystery.
It's Distiller 8.1.13.

Perhaps this is due to reinstalling FM7, when there was a Distller 8.1.13 already installed?
If so, is there any remedy? Thank you.

Hmmm, that's a difficult question to answer very precisely, but in general I would say yes, that it is possible that there could be two versions of Distiller on your system, which could lead to difficulties getting correct PDFs from FrameMaker.
Unless you choose the correct option when FM was reinstalled, FM's installer will also install a FM-specific version of Distiller that **only** works with FrameMaker. So if you already had a full version of Acrobat (as you indicated, it was 8.1.13), and then you reinstalled FM7, it is very possible that the install added the older FM-specific version of Distiller, so that you now have two versions installed. (FM's installer is not at all smart!)
To know what version of Distiller created a specific PDF, open the PDF and do File > Properties, which should bring up the "Document Properties" window. You might be able to see something in the Application or PDF Producer entries that will tell you what version of Distiller is being used.
Do the same thing for a PDF that was created previously, prior to the FM7 reinstalls, which doesn't have the disappearing symbol problem.
If the two are different, that will pretty much be the proof that there are two Distillers installed.
EDIT: what I should have written is "that will pretty much be the proof that there have been two Distillers installed at some point, whether or not they are both installed currently." END EDIT
As for the solution, if they turn out to be different, I would start by uninstalling FrameMaker. Then reboot. Then, be sure that you can still open PDFs. And confirm that you are viewing the PDF in the full Acrobat product (e.g. 8.1.13) and not just in Acrobat Reader.
After that, I would reinstall FrameMaker, being careful to choose only FrameMaker, not to let it proceed with installing the Distiller product. If I recall correctly the install dialog box is not 100% clear when FM is finished and it offers to install Distiller, the wording is quite confusing.
So after that then check the Acrobat setup to be sure you have the correct directory paths to the fonts setup, and test FM with making a PDF again.
If that doesn't fix the problem then you may need to uninstall Acrobat and FrameMaker, reboot, and reinstall each one again.
Let us know how you get on --
Sheila

Pinta, Adobe uses two version number formats for FM releases, and I've forgotten what version 7.04 is equivalent to. You can check the version number as shown in Help > About. It would be wise to check whether you have the latest available patch for ver 7 which is 7.0p579, here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=22&platform=Windows
All FM patches need to be installed individually, in sequence, they are not cumulative.
Also, check to see whether you have more than one Symbol font installed; FM has difficulty if there are multiple versions of the same font file, or if there are multiple Symbol file types, e.g. a .ttf and a Symbol font in a Postscript or OpenType font. The advice has always been to have just a single .ttf or a single .otf Symbol font, not both.
