Structured document suggestions for header/new-page reminder step
Hello all, I'm using FrameMaker Version 17.0.3.546 My engineering organization is very afraid of change. We write procedures and organize the content as such:
A. SECTION HEADER (These are always the same A-D)
1. Here is level1
a. Here is level2
(1) level3 ... and so on until we get to a new page, where there is a reminder of all ancestor levels as such:
-----NEW PAGE----
A. 1. a.
(2) Here is a level3 step in the procedure that started a new page.
(3) The next level3 step
I'm trying to set up a structured document so there is cross-referencing within the procedure and for other procedures, pagination is automatic, list of effective pages is created for the end-user, etc.
I think I can tackle a lot of these problems, but I've run into a few issues.
1. I cannot get the autonumbering to work as I want with the new page "reminders" and cross-referencing becomes hard with that too (especially to look nice with tab breaks in there).
2. My organization has a lot of procedures that are copy and pasted from before into a new file location, so I could see this messing with cross-referencing to outside procedures.
3. Converting old documents to the new format when copying them to a new version.
I'm looking for any and all suggestions (especially the autonumber/new page thing) because right now my organization focuses so much on format and how it looks, I think the content of the document is getting neglected. (They manually type in the "A. 1. a. (1)..." etc. with the tabs and everything - yikes, imagine you have to add or delete a step).
I want to create automation for the end-user:
1. Is a structured document the best way to go about this?
2. If so, please help with the autonumber/new page format. I'm willing to change it a little, but I have to convince a lot of people that it's better for the industry workers performing the procedure that the new format can still be used.
