Question

Structured FrameMaker and TFS

We currently use RoboHelp9 and RoboSource Control, but we are moving to Structured FrameMaker (FM10) and want to use TFS for version control. If anyone out there is using this combination, how do you like it? Can you check in and check out easily? View recent changes, etc?

Thanks!

You'll want to think about how you can:

  • rename files without breaking links
  • search for topics based on metadata or content
  • identify the uses of a topic in order to assess the effect of a change

As far as I know, TFS isn't equipped to do any of that.  If you have the option, I recommend investing in a CMS that does what you need. (I speak as one stuck with SharePoint, at least for the time being.)

The boss wants to use TFS as it's already in use here (software company), but if it doesn't work then I had thoughts of using sharepoint as a 'CMS'. Can you use sharepoint with version 10 of Frame or only Frame 11?

I'm not sure if FM10 has the CMS Connector. But SharePoint doesn't address the points I raised either. In fact, its options for version control are probably more limited, because it has no concept of a "changeset." On the other hand, it has better support for arbitrary metadata.

[Edit} Adobe also has a forum dedicated to FrameMaker Content Management Systems. http://forums.adobe.com/community/framemaker/cms?view=overview

Bump,

I'm in the same situtation. Using FM10 currently but looking at version control with TFS to centralise everything

I'm not so sure why you would want to dig holes with a chainsaw...

There's a right tool for the right job, and I'm not sure why you would want to use a software development tool for documentation.
