TimesNewRomanPSMT-Identity-H font replacement

New Here ,
Feb 23, 2024 Feb 23, 2024

Hello,

Currently running FrameMaker 16.0.5.1096, Acrobat Pro 2023.008.20533 (we did just recently upgrade Acrobat).

Recently when opening a document, the alert “Document is using unavailable fonts…” pops up, I select Ok and the file opens. It replaces the fonts, but it is changing existing font which should be Times New Roman to TimesNewRomanPSMT-Identity-H font in certain random areas. See image, yellow highlighted text is the -Identity-H font. The arrow it pointing to the placement of the cursor and the properties are reflected in the paragraph and character designer. But it is very random, and it is not present in the 5.1.2.1 paragraph (or anywhere else on the page).Font Issue.png

Side note the formatting we are using: a heading paragraph style (Arial) with auto numbering that uses a Run-in head to pull the next paragraph line (Times New Roman) up and separate by a period.

This file has gone through nine deliveries and this issue has not presented itself until now. We have delivered the file as a PDF and have verified it looks as it should in each delivery.

 Troubleshooting:

  • Reviewed the previous versions of this document in FrameMaker and these instances DO consistently appear in the same spots as pictured. Somehow this "bug" or “font inconsistency” was present the whole time and something has changed to where we can now see it (because like I said it was not visible in the PDFs in previous deliveries).
  • Ruled out this as something specific to my profile as two other coworkers are experiencing the same thing.
  • So far this has affected 4 different documents that we are now aware of.
  • To make a PDF I print to ps and then run through the distiller. (I have tired the publish and save as pdf as well.)
  • The fix we are doing is View > Panels > Fonts selecting this font and replacing it, but it does seem to keep the kerning of that TimesNewRomanPSMT-Identity-H font, so we also have to reapply the paragraph style or apply the default character font.

Any idea why this is happening or any advice for the best way to solve/prevent this.

Thank you,

Jenn

If you are able to share a document, I can open it with FrameMaker 2022 and see if I get any font messages. It may have to do with the Acrobat upgrade, but it is showing up with FrameMaker so it seems like it's best to check there first.

No, MIF-washing is a technique to save a FM doc as .mif, then open it back up in FM and resave as .fm again. It acts like a clean up routine to clear out cruft in your docs.

Hello, Jenn ( @jenniferr59561502 ),

this looks familiar to me.

Only way I know of to get rid of this:

Mark the the whole paragraph and apply the "Default Para Font" via the character catalog.

I think this happens when pasting text from another source (like word or pdf) and importing the wrong font-information as well with the text.

So I am always using "paste special" with "unicode" active as this imports the text only.

Regards

Stephan

I think Stephan is correct here about pasting from another source. The odd thing is that FrameMaker doesn't report those text strings as an override, even though the base paragraph format is clearly overriden by the rogue font. (I looked at Jennifer's document.)

re: …pasting text from another source (like word or pdf)…

And if that's the case, a MIF wash (mentioned up-thread) won't be of much help, because it won't clear overrides, nor alter any formats auto-created at import.

That does make sense as we are copying content from another source, mainly PDF. so that explanins how it got in there. how it is randomly showing up i don't understand but applying default font does cure it.

This TimesNewRomanPSMT Identity-H matter, more generally the CID Identity-H encoding question. is not specific to FM. It can happen in any app, and using any PDF generator.

Here's Dov on it a few years ago.
