Which CMS is better?

Hi, we are now using TortoiseSVN, which is free. I wonder if there is any better solutions? I checked FM Guide, there are three: Adobe Eexperience Manager, EMC Documentum, MS SharePoint. What is your reccommendation? BTW, is AEM free?

AEM will cost you at least six significant digits plus more for the required consulting...

You also mention that you want to handle your graphics. For that you should be looking at DAMs (digital asset management systems) in addition to your CMS.

You first need to clearly establish what you need to do with a CMS, i.e. a list of features, and what specifically are your problems/pain points with what you're currently doing in your workflow, in order to be able to gauge how any tool will help you out.

As Gorly indicates, there are many things to consider. You're kind of saying "I need to get somewhere - what's better: a bicycle, smartcar, Ford, BMW, pickup truck, powerboat, cruise ship, 747?" There are lots of questions that would need to be answered first before any kind of recommendation can even be attempted.

Also keep in mind, like the saying goes, the devil is in the details...

Well, thank you. I actually had used some CMSs, what now I am doing it to try my luck to see if someone can list some comparative parameters between some CMSs and let me pick one. Maybe it's too greedy.

But I will look into DAM, surely.

If I have to list my requirements, what I can think over is:

1. Basic version controls for fm and book files, which we use them to produce PDFs. At least check out and edit and check in easily and exclusively.

2. For picture management, I wish there is some platform like when I upload an fm, the pictures linked to it can be automatically uploaded although they exist in another folder in which there might be other unused pictures which will not be uploaded.

3. Small cost or free.

4. Better then TortoiseSVN which I am now using. If you have no idea about it, forget this point.

If you're looking fro something more robust and extensive than Tortise, then you could check out the Alfresco Open Source version at: Alfresco Community Edition | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net

You can use the standard WebDAV connector from FM or add your own using the FDK. See the FM devnet page at: Framemaker Developer Center | Adobe Developer Connection

There are some articles on using this with FM: Adobe FrameMaker 9 and Alfresco Community Edition Open Source CMS: Seamless Integration, Free Version Control and More |…

If you search on FrameMaker and Alfersco, you'll get a lot more hits and some indications of organizations that are using this CMS with FM.

Hi,

the answer to this is pretty simple: there is no answer (at least none that answers your original question)

Every CMS out there has it's advantages and disadvantages and each of them is tailored for a specific use.

It is usually a long and more or less painful evaluation process to find the "right" CMS for your needs.

While most of the CMS out there are tailored for use with HTML and web content, there are also specialized CMS

for documentation, product information (those are called PIMs), software code and many more.

So, without knowing (in detail) what you're needs exactly are (and will be in future), you will not get a sufficient answer at all.

Well, I am now using FM structured to generate fm files and book files and in the end, publish them into PDF user manuals. I need some platform to manage the fm files, pictures (which can screen the ones that is used in the fm file and filter out those not used), check out and check in and edit fm files easily. If any plus functions, it will be better.

Let me draw an analogy here,

you just stated that you want to build a square shaped box made of wood. And you're asking how to put the thing together.

As you might imagine, there's about a gazillion answers to that question, and all of them leading to a square shaped box made of wood.

You might just use nails and a hammer, screws and a screwdriver or glue, four bulldozers and some tape (and a lot of imagination).

You really need to think about your needs, wishes and organizational structures, before you venture out and look for "something".
