Why does new text type in as "invisible"?

Why does new text type in as invisible in a FrameMaker 12 document? Only one chapter in an existing book does this. As I type, the curser movers and I can select the invisible text and delete it. I've checked the color of font and have tried changing it, no change.

    Make sure the color you're trying to apply (typically black, but might not be) is not set to Invisible in Color Views.

    View > Color > Color Views

    The problem could be more arcane, or a bug, but first rule out that some standard feature of FM isn't doing what it was designed to do (if enabled unintentionally).
