Question

Word 2010 import filter?

Is there an import filter I can obtain that imports MS Word 2010 documents into FrameMaker 7.2?

The current import filter only imports MS Word 6.0/7.0 documents.

Thanks,

Steve

On a machine that does not have any older versions of Frame or Acrobat installed, download and install a trial version of FM11, which advertises some sort Word 2010 support.

The Word files may need to be re-saved as .doc rather then .docx, but try both (via re-save - don't just change the filename extension).

Open the Word files in FM11.

Re-save as MIF7

(if FM11 supports that, MIF9 otherwise).

Open the MIFs in FM7.2.

The FM11 trial install is fully capable for 30 days. That should be enough time to discover if this path works.

You could encounter insurmountable problems if the Word docs are using Unicode to any serious degree.

No. However, MS Word users can save down to the old format and/or you use other programs (Open Office) to save the documents into a format that FrameMaker 7.2 can import. FrameMaker 7.2 really is ancient software, you cannot expect Adobe to provide new features for old software.

Hi,

I have a manual done in Word 2003 whose content I need to move to Frame 7.2.  The manual is 49 MB in size, 322 pages, with scores of embedded graphics.  I have tried numerous tactics but none works well.

I tried importing the Word file, but that resulted in a file that looked useful but was 109 MB, all the paragraphs and figure captions needed to be reapplied, and numbered listed were linked together up to number 731! I wonder if something enlarged the size of the graphics, most of which are jpeg files.

I tried cut and "paste special as rtf" and that either failed or crashed Frame.

I  tried exporting the Word doc to RTF but the resulting file as 534 MB big.

I looked at the MIF2GO web page but it only works the other way, and others like Lexmation had nothing to offer.

Does anyone know if Frame 10 or 11 can cleanly import Word docs.?

Is there a technique or third-party tool that would work?

Yours,

Michael F

I can't recall if it was the case with earlier versions of FrameMaker,

but with the latest versions, it is a common recommendation in FM to

open the Word file, rather than import it. You might try that.
