trouble with drawing / painting on a new layer

I'm new to fresco, and having a lot of trouble with layers. I will add a new layer and select a brush/pencil (same or different than I've just used) but the app switches me back to the most recently used layer, even if I lock that recently used layer (and then it tells me I can't draw on a locked layer.) What am I doing wrong?

I think you are trying to draw with a vector brush in a pixel layer. If you create a vector layer you can draw in it.

Is there a way you could take a screenshot of your layers when you have that issue?

Here are the photos, first with the locked layer and the layer I'm trying to draw on selected. And then as I try to draw, Fresco switches to the locked layer. (

 

 

I've worked in Illustrator for decades, so do understand layers)

I think you are trying to draw with a vector brush in a pixel layer. If you create a vector layer you can draw in it.

    I should add, I'm on my iPhone. Trying to see if I like the app enough to buy an iPad.
