I just updated to High Sierra on my MacBookPro and now get a window with this message:
In order to open Adobe Illustrator CS6.app you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime. Click "more info..." to visit the legacy Java SE 6 download website.
When I clicked more info it took me to the website. I downloaded it and attempted to open it, when I got the message that a more recent Java was installed on my computer. I dumped what I had just installed and couldn't find a more recent Java on my computer.
I contacted Apple Support they helped me install an up to date Java and told me to uninstall Illustrator and to reinstall. Just wondered if there is more to it than that.
Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. Indesign works fine as well as Photoshop. Flash player is also not working.

you won't be able to use ai without thta legacy java and even with it you can expect some problems because your os is not compatible with older software.
that said, adobe's posted a work-around which may help: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/install-creative-suite-mac-os-sierra.html

Do I have to have a Creative Cloud Membership to do this? I have the hard disks for CS5.5 but not CS6. If I remember correctly that was a direct upgrade, but I don't think I ever got hard disks for CS6.

no, you don't need a cc membership if you have a cs6 serial number (and cs5.5 serial number, if the cs6 is an upgrade).
you will the cs6 installation files and you'll need your cs6 and cs5.5 serial numbers.

Thank you for that great information. I do have the serial # for CS5.5, but where do I find the serial # for CS6?

you have 3 ways to recover a serial number that you once had:
1. if you purchased from or registered with adobe (automatically done with cs6):,
a. you can check your account, https://accounts.adobe.com
b. you can check with adobe support* (be prepared to give the email address used when registering purchasing)
2. if your adobe program is installed on another computer you can recover its serial number from that computer, (win:) http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html, (mac:) https://mac-product-key-finder.com/
3. http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html

One more question. Should I uninstall the Adobe CS6 and then reinstall from the source you gave me above? I found that I had saved the original .dmg for Illustrator, uninstall just illustrator (because that one is the problem) and reinstall from the .DMG?

your serial number must match the installation file. so if your cs6 serial is for ai, use the ai installation file. if your cs6 serial is for a suite, use the suite installation file.

Downloaded CS6 and I am still getting the same message! Not being able to open illustrator is like losing my right arm. Everything I have done for the last 15 years is in illustrator. This is very upsetting! Where do I go from here?

you could try finding a mac with a compatible os.

And just use it for my work with illustrator. I went to Java and found this suggestion Java for OS X 2014-001: How to re-enable the Apple-provided Java SE 6 web plug-in and Web Start feat...
Is there any way to get just Illustrator?

What about that Java workaround?
I thought maybe I could get just illustrator since it is the one that is the problem, but I went to products section of Adobe and see now that it can only be accessed through the "cloud" at a minimum of $240 a year. My little business is not big enough to pay for something like that year after year. Then I saw in the FAQS that it works fine with El Capitan. What about later MACOS upgrades? Back to the same issue. No thank you.
