Printer spooler error when attempting to install Acrobat Pro (also Reader)

I tried to install the trial version of Acrobat Pro today.  Installation would not complete due to an inability to stop the print spooler.

After this failure to install, I was no longer able to access my printer via the previously installed Acrobat Reader.  I uninstalled Reader and attempted to reinstall it, only to discover the same print spooler problem.  Neither program will now install.

I am running the latest version of Windows 8.  Can anybody help?

What printer? What system? What exact errors? You need to be much more specific.

Printer - Brother MFC-8840D

Windows 8.1 Pro

Intel i7-4770 CPU

64 bit operating system

I just tried installing Reader again - the Installer froze up and left me the message "Error has been encountered. Close this window and try downloading again." The window won't close and Task Manager hasn't been able to force it to close, so I'll have to reboot before providing more information.

Back with more information.

After rebooting I successfully installed Acrobat Reader XI and established that it could contact the printer.

I then tried to install the trial version of Acrobat Pro XI.  The procedure was slightly different this time, as this time it went via Adobe Creative Cloud, but the installation failed.

The error report follows:

Exit Code: 7

Please see specific errors below for troubleshooting. For example, ERROR:

Further note - bizarrely, despite being told the product failed to install, I found shortcuts to Adobe FormsCentral and Adobe Acrobat Pro XI on my desktop. I double-clicked on Acrobat Pro and it apparently launched normally. The installer then launched, validated the trial, updated the files and closed completely. Presumably this means everything now works?
