2 colors in line

Hi,

in illustratir, I have a circle with a line crossing it. The part of the line that is inside the circle I want in one color and the ends of the line that are outside the circle I want in another color. How do i do that?

A couple of options:

1) Draw the line through the circle.

2) With the Scissors Tool cut the line where it intersects the circle

3) Select and recolor the appropriate line segments

4) If you wish, bring the circle to the front.

Alternatively, if you want to maintain a single line segment you may:

Draw the line and construct a two-color gradient adjusted to have the color changes match the intersections with the circle.

Now I actually have 3 cut lines that some are painted in black and the
middle one in red. how do I connect them to one line and apply
variablewidth profile 1 to it?

First Outline the stroke with the variable width and use Live paint to recolor.

Or use Live Paint with the option for the Live Paint Bucket to Paint Strokes.

As long as it is a Live Paint object you can reposition the stroke.

Or with a variable width profile and an Opacity Mask. No need to outline the stroke, just 2 strokes on top of each other (see attached ai/pdf).

And, just for grins, if the stroke widths permit, you can use a single path with multiple strokes and different width profiles:
