3D and Materials options are grayed out?

I am trying to add an "inflate" effect to some colored objects and when I apply the "inflate" 3d type, it leaves all the other options grayed out and unusable. See screenshot. How can I actually apply the other options in this window?

You have selected multiple inflated objects. 

What happens if you select a single one?

Also, I want to mention if you want the effect options available when inflate is applied to multiple objects at the same time you need to group them.
