I made a 3D object by extrusion. I then chose to Expand appearance. It is supposed to create an object with editable shapes. The result is not made of different shapes. Illustrator 26.0.1

There's a "Render as Vector" setting in the Raytracing options. You can try if it helps. You will have to first check it and then click on Render for it to do anything.

I've been playing around with this, and another solution seems to be: add the (revolved/extruded etc.) 3D object into a Library. This seems to create a shape out of the object that you can drag out of the Library and rotate in 2D space.

There is a way to get editable shapes as in previous versions of Illustrator.

The solution is here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/expand-appearance-turns-3d-object-into-image-instead-of-path/td-p/12849298

Is that supposed to work comparably to the old 3D effect on expanding? It seems to still give non-native art, just with a 0.01 px stroke wireframe behind it:

Maybe some time in the future.

But in some cases it might just help achieve what was intended.

Use the old 3D mode: Effect > 3D & Materials > 3D (Classic)

Expanding the new one results in non-native art.

Thank you for that. I was able to accomplish what I wanted. It is unfortunate that the newer version does not function in that manner.

But that solved my problem.
