7m x 1.8m billboard banner

I have been asked to create a large billboard design (7m x 1.8m). I intend to use Illustrator (v24.0.3). I don't yet have specs from the printer, but just wondering how to set up the file, as I see Illustrator won't create a file larger than 577.955 cm width. Advice?

- Would I be expected to create a 300dpi, or 150dpi for an image this large?

- Also, would EPS be the recommended final file to supply or is PDF still viable at that size?

I create most of my billboards in InDesign and suppliy PDFs to my printer. Usually billboards require 25–30 ppi. You'll have to check with your printer as to what the requirements are.

Also remember to set an adequate (upscaled) resolution in Effects>Document Raster Effects Settings.

one more note... at that size the resolution will most likely be quite low, even less than 72dpi

it is very common to create the document to scale. 10% even. Regarding the output resolution if your printer requires 72dpi make sure raster images at 10%scale is 720ppi.

Thansk Grant. Using Illustrator at 10%, how do I make sure the raster images are set a 720ppi. It will contain several images.

I've started on a file at 50% dimensions, 150dpi. Will that become a size problem for delivery?

The information is in the links panel and if an image is selected top left of the main bar will show ppi.

You will need to confirm with your printer what the intended out put will be. Some printers just love to hit you back with the "golden" 300 dpi, but in truth at that size I doubt it will be printed close to that. but to be safe design with 150dpi as your target output (IF POSSIBLE but dont stress too much), ie. at 50% try to keep the images at 300dpi (300x0,5=150)

What i am trying to get at is at (that size banner) standing back to view at 20 meters you will not be able to see if its at 72 or 150 or 300 dpi... so most printers will be happy with 72dpi and extatic with 150.
