Hi there.
Is it possible to edit a single letter in AI.
|The font is Royal signage typeface and I want to edit the capital S. Just a tiny bit maybe take off the serif.
What about the option of using a similar Font that is not so decorative?
It is to be printed if that makes a difference.
Brand new to AI. Love it!

You can convert it to outlines and edit the path. Editing the actual font in AI is not possible.

Michael,
There is this for CC, where you can turn the outlined letter into its own font, then switch between the two fonts when writing.

or you can aim higher with Fontographer, or FontLab,

This is a great program--I have both the AI and PS plugin. Just want to mention that one should check any legal issues before converting another company's font.

Fontself allows you to create new fonts in AI. It does not support editing of existing fonts, so is not appropriate to OP’s needs.
As others have suggested, if this is a one-off edit being made in a particular artwork, the simplest solution is just to outline the text and adjust its path in AI. OTOH, if this font is being used (e.g.) in a customer’s branding, it makes sense to create a modified version of the original font file to be used across all of the customer’s artworks.
Purchasing a professional font authoring app just to tweak an existing font is probably overkill. I’d suggest OP first tries fontforge.org, which is free.
Also, when saving the modified font file, be sure to change its font family and PostScript names as well, e.g. “Royal Signage Customer Name” and “RoyalSignageCustomerName”, so it cannot be confused with the original.

Thanks for your awesome replies.
can I get your opinion on what you would do to make the "S" less cluttered?
Royal signage typeface.

You mean this?
And there is no other capital S in the font? And you are using it for long text?
Can you perhaps give us an idea of your usage of that typeface?

Michael,
Is the shape of the similar S in small caps (close to) what you wish to have (the last letter (in Zeus, among others) in the fourth image)?

Yes that last letter in Zeus is what Im looking for. In the log that Im using it for there is only the lower case s. and it's plain.
I wonder why there is two different esses.
I didn't actually design it, my designer did, I will investigate further tomorrow.
Thanks for all your help.
Speaking of esses....
Dear Thir,
I am writing thith letter to apply for a job at your thoe thore.

Michael,
I believe there are alternative versions of all the more elaborate small caps to enable them to give way to one another.
With regard to the capital S and the elaborate small caps s, you can ask Heritage Type as suggested by Monika.
And/or either/both of yous (the s to specify its including you and your designer) can outline both the S and the s and try to start with the middle part of the S between the very top and the very bottom (where you have horizontal Handles and hopefully even Anchor Points) and then scale up the s more or less proportionally to best possible fit of the same part (which will be too heavy) and then adapt/adjoin the end parts to the S (including some thinning, not least at the end of the bottom swirl). Undoubtedly there will be some further work to make it work, also with the other logo letters; and obviously it is necessary to also work with the texture.
So much for esses here.
Always make sure that you are in accordance with the terms of the licence.
Edit: Hi David. I just saw your final sentence after writing mine; best to avoid another kind of sentence.

You want to have that changed all over the text in all instances of the letter?
Would you be using the font on several documents?
In that case: contact the foundry and ask them if they would do it. They will not do it for free of course, but maybe it's cheaper than you expect.
