adjusting circle edges

Hello there. I have a question, I know it's very simple but I couldn't find an answer on the web.

can you tell me please how to edit or create sth like the image? actually, I can draw a circle and erase some parts of it. but I can't edit the edges like this, making it thick at the endpoints.

Draw one circle.

Duplicate the circle.

Move the duplicate a bit up (or down).

Use the Pathfinder Panel to remove the overlapping part.
