In my book Classroom in a book a workbook from adobe I am asked to create a new document:File>new and I should see a Preset Details area. But there isn't one and on page 79 of the 2017 edition there is a photo of a New Document dialog box that doesn't even exist in Illustrator or I can't get to it and no tutorials show me how. Nor can I get to it without loading up my downloads for this interactive book. Even in the New Document box that does pop up I can't enter more than 1 artboard where it gives you that option. If i do the print option I select reverts to custom and not print. No explanation for this either.
Am I the only one having problems here with this book and is there a better book. Up to this point it seemed user friendly. Now it isn't even loading up the same formats for the art work as you see in the book. The illustrations one is to work from art formatted differently. This is frustration.

Maureen,
As I (mis)understand it, you may use the Use Preferences>General>Use Legacy New Document Interface, see the screenshot by iambillythekid in post #7 here:

Hi
After launching Adobe Illustrator use this shortcut
Mac: Command + K
Windows: Ctrl + K
That will bring up your preferences. "Check" the box next to Use Legacy New Document Interface. I'm sending an image, hope it helps

Hi Sebastian,
Preferences general use legacy new file interface was checked went back to File New to get it and again the old interface minus templates etc showed up. Whether I use the peach pit book or not it seems not to exist on adobe illustrator for me or do I have to close out the download and book then open up illustrator without accessing the book files as if they weren't there in the first place and do it from illustrator direct as if the book lessons weren't there? Now I am trying to do it thru the lesson I have uploaded . Could that be interfering with my ability to install the new dialog box? Don't know how to reload adobe preferences either as the book has a restoring default preferences for each project. Sorry this is a hot mess.
Are there any other options in book form for learning illustrator and photoshop that are more user friendly?

Can you please show a screenshot of what you see?
And can you give your posts in the forums slightly more structure? At the moment it is really difficult to understand,
what you do,
what you expect to happen,
what you already have tried and which results you experienced.
Perhaps you learn better from video? In that case you could try Lynda.com, which is a paid service.
The official documentation has some videos as well. You can access it via the Help menu.

blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } Very simple: I cannot get new legacy dialog box to pop up when I press File>new. I get the old format that has no templates to choose from. I have checked off new legacy dialog box in Preference.general. New legacy dialog box. In fact it was already checked when I installed adobe illustrator.Secondly Lynda.com sounds great I've seen it but I'd like to have access to a person with that service and save myself the hours of going thru this process.

I am going to take a guess that you are on page 78 in Lesson 3. This is what it should look like.
Also (not said in the book) click More Settings in the lower right to get the old dialog box.
What are you seeing if not this?
I recommend More Settings to get to the Legacy dialog box if you need it so that you get used to the new Start Screen and have access to the awesome templates courtesy of Adobe Stock.
Also, FYI the CIB is not from Adobe in spite of the tagline. It is written by Brian Wood and is from Peachpit.
Don't worry if it says Custom not Print. It means you started with Print and made a change, such as the number of artboards or the artboard size. So it's no longer the Print profile. It's Custom based on the Print profile. A beginner would not know that, I agree.

Maureen, without a screenshot of what you are actually seeing, we can only make guesses.
Please tell us your version as well. On a Mac, go to Illustrator CC > About Illustrator. If you are on Windows, go to Help.
You haven't said what you are seeing instead of the screen shot I posted. What does it look like when you choose File > New?

@maureenn39770873 never told us exactly what her problem was or how she solved it. Please start a new thread and ask your question there. Thanks!
