Adobe Illustrator create countries on a map

Hi dear users,

I wanna make a map with illustrator and got a problem.

If I create for example a shape of Europe, and then want to add Germany, France and more countries, what can I do

that the new path/ object I draw aligns perfectly with the coast and neighbour countries? In Photoshop you can simply

make a selection of the Europe shape and delete the overlapping parts of Germany at the coast.

How can I do that the easiest way in Illustrator? I am rather new to AI, so it would be good if you answer rather detailled.

Thx for ur help!

1 I would draw everything, but not the borders they share. No fill color, just stroke color.

2 These are the shapes I have drawn and moved them a little to make the example more clear.

3 If you would color these shapes you woul get this, the shapes would auto close, so don't fill them with color

4 Select the shapes and choose Object > Live Paint > Make and fill the shapes with the Live Paint Bucket (K)

When you are finished you can choose Object > Live Paint > Expand.
