Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 has stopped working when attempting to open or start new file

I just installed Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard (yes I know its old but I don't want to pay a subscription). When in Illustrator I try to open a file up or start a new file, I get the following error "Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 has stopped working" "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it still does the same thing. Photoshop works fine so I don't believe its a problem with the download. Please help! Running Windows 10 (not by choice)

They never updated/optimized CS5 to work with windows 10.  So when you choose to update your OS beyond your software, or install old software on a newer OS  — the stability is based on the remnants of code that might be similar.

Always check online, before installing software

Older versions of Adobe Illustrator system requirements

is it possible to only update illustrator to cs6 if I originally got illustrator as a package from creative suite, or do i have to update the entire suite?

CS6 is only available as part of the CC subscription service. You may have to use a virtual disk with XP or Win7 or Win8 to install and use CS5.

windows 10 seems to cause problems for pre-CC versions now. i doubt this is a solvable problem.
