  1. Two-page document in illustator. 470kb
  2. I'm adding 120kb jpg picture from PS
  3. After exporting to PDF, the file size grows to 12MB (!)
  4. So i create new document, copy-paste and export again - 5MB(!)

What is going on?

Correct answer Ton Frederiks

If photoshop can compress JPG to 120Kb why illustator can't?
(i can't edit posts)

If you need a small PDF file, save a copy as PDF.

Turn Off  Illustrator editing capabilities and set the compression options in the save dialog.

You can get the same small pdf as from InDesign

If you need a smaller file, link the image and turn off PDF compatibility in the save options.

It's not the option, I need small ...and hq PDF file.

I do the comparison, and PDF from indesign is much smaller.

A jpeg file uses compression.

The jpeg image will be uncompressed when used in Illustrator.

The image will be embedded in the PDF part of the Illustrator file and maybe also in the Illustrator part.

I do not understand, JPG is a lossy method of compression.
So where is the suddenly additional data coming from?

To show a jpeg file it has to be decompressed.
