AI 2017 freezes when I select multiple items in my file

Working on a file, using Shift key to select multiple profiles and the software freezes.  I've tried deleting my Prefs file, still happening.  I actually opened the Help>About Illustrator option and the software froze.

Windows 7

8 GB RAM

Intel Core i7-4800MQ CPU 2.70GHz

64 bit OS

Dell Precision M4800

Adobe Illustrator CC 2017 - just performed update this morning.

Does this problem happen only on this file, or on all files? Did this happen prior to the 2017 update?

Please create a new document, draw some shapes with one of the primitive drawing tools and let us know how that works.

It happens on all files.  It did happen with the last version I was working with but much less.  I just thought it was because I didn't save my file enough and it was using too many resources or something.  Now it happens on every file I open.

I just created a new file, added some circles and squares and then selected, deselected the shapes, grouped them, ungrouped them, made a few changes to the shapes and then it froze and crashed.

Do you have any plug ins for Illustrator or 3rd party enhancements (virus protection, clipboard enhancers, font management, etc) to Windows 7?

Do  you have atleast Service pack 1 installed on win 7?

How well does Illustrator run if you restart your computer and have no other apps but Illustrator running?

Hi Mike,

No plug ins at all for Illustrator, I have virus protection but nothing else I can think of that would cause this.  I have 21.0.1 installed currently.  I just did the most recent update today and still no change.

I just shut everything down except AI and also still no change.

Is there a way to revert back to the 2016 version, I had no problems with that.

You may be able to download 2015.3 is what you are looking for. Whenever you upgrade an Adobe cloud product, I recommend to after you click upgrade on the next screens very carefully look for keep previous version. Nowadays drives have plenty of free space and having the previous versions do not affect the functionality of the latest with how the software is currently created.

If this happens with a certain file search the forums for:

• nested symbols
• the dreaded deleted global colors huh fix bad plus in bug

Please add a copy of your file with dropbox link or similar to this post, and we should be able to resolve this quickly then.

If this happens on all files, even a simple new one you create — the problem is with your install or a font or similar.

The document is empty for me. I drew some elements, and did not have any issues on mac 10.10.5 & AI 2015.3

I contacted Support this morning and he deleted my last 3 Illustrator folders from App Data, as well as my Adobe Illustrator Presets folder.  This seemed to fix the crashing problem.
