Ai won't open images included in Ai file.

I have .ai files from another designer who seems to have exported them with .png images included.

When I view the .ai file with MacOS Finder (the space bar quick view thing) then it shows me all the proper images and fonts as intended. When I open the .ai file in illustrator, it tells me that all the .png files are missing (also some fonts, but that's a smaller issue).

How can Finder view the images perfectly and Illustrator tell me that they are missing from it's own container?

The finder shows the pdf part of the Illustrator file while the Illustrator part (that you open) has the images linked.

You could ask the designer to save a package for you.

Do you need to edit the file?

If not just place the ai file inside another ai file you've created.

If you do, open with Acrobat/Distiller and save as an .eps - yes I know epses are horrible, but this will get you your vectors and the pngs as placed images... Open in Illy, save as pdf/ai...

If you can't contact the designer, then you can also extract the stuff from the PDF. The fonts cannot be extracted, but outlined correctly

Okay, I figured that there might be some kind of a preview format also included and that's what's showing.

At least now I know that it's not a problem with Ai, it's just a lack of knowledge on my part. 🙂
