Align Tool not Working Properly

The align button is stuck on the 'align to artboard' setting. I have two items selected (a text box and a vector square) and it will not allow me to align to selection. It is "stuck" on 'align to arboard.'

It was working perfectly when I started my project. The issue seems to have started after I went into the preferences and selected "scale strokes and effects" in the general tab.

I just figured out what the problem was on my own. I had grouped the two items so they read as one object.

My guess is you may have been using the Direct Select tool to select your time. I always switch to the top normal Selection tool, to ensure am selecting group, masked groups, etc.
