Question

AMD Radeon pro 5500XT 8gb compatibility with illustrator

Hi could someone tell me if the AMD Radeon pro GPU 5500XT 8gb would work with Adobe illustrator?  I just bought a 2020 imac 27 inch with this GPU and read that people have had crashing issues due to GPU. Is this accurate?
I first bought the m1 pro MacBook which would keep crashing , and give the beach ball forever.  Was told m1 is having compatibility issues with illustrator. Have tried speaking to Adobe for two weeks, I keep requesting for someone to give me an answer,  I never get a call back. The technicians I speak to have no idea. Still waiting for a senior to call me. Don't think that's going to happen. Have called more than 20 times. So went out and bought an intel Mac . Which now I'm scared to open as the GPU might not be compatible.

Also would anyone know why the following occurs. When using the pattern tool to create patterns, after I press done,  illustrator goes back to the original art board, but eats half of the motifs on the art board. Ruining my original designs.
Thank you appreciate some advice.

Hi @Lisl27618698v4aj,

Thanks for reaching out. Would you mind elaborating on the issue you are facing? Is GPU greyed out, or are you getting errors, or are you facing issues while working on some specific files? Also, would you mind sharing the system & GPU specs and the exact version of OS & Ai?

I would suggest resetting Illustrator preferences and updating GPU drivers if you are using a windows machine. Also, I would recommend updating both OS & Ai to the latest version.

Let us know how it goes. I will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Anshul Saini

Hi @shanice24820425yiyc,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. This is not the experience we want you to have. AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8 GB is a supported GPU to run Illustrator. However, I can't comment on its performance, but on paper, it performs well. You have mentioned that you get too many beach balls and the app crashed a lot on M1 Pro Macbook. Illustrator has been compatible with M1 chips for almost a year now and works well. But it varies from user to user.

Would you mind confirming if you are working with files that are saved on Network Drive/ Server, Shared Folder, or External HDD) when beachball or crashing happened? What was the last action performed or tool/ effect used before Illustrator crashed or beachball started happening?

Also, please share screenshots of the artboard after creating a pattern. It will provide us with more insight & clearer picture of what is happening.

We are here to help. We just need more info.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Anshul.  Thank you so much for replying. I had read on the Adobe website for illustrator system requirements (updated this year) the compatible graphics cards and the AMD Radeon pro 5500xt wasn't listed. Also another person said the same thing. I've provided screenshots for this. Has this now changed?
Each time I would call Adobe about the beach ball with the M1 pro they would say, many people are having the same issues with these new chips. That's why I thought I need to buy something with the intel chip. The freezing would happen doing anything. I then opened a new account downloaded Adobe again. It said it had to download Rosetta. Which I thought it shouldn't need this anymore. Found it more stable than other account. But would freeze when saving to png in particular, expanding, exporting and using the pattern tool especially with 7x7 or 9x9. Lots of lag in pattern tool. Once it starts to give me the beach ball, then a simple move will give me the beach ball. Always working with documents saved to computers hardive / desktop.
I have provided two screenshots showing how illustrator eats motifs after pressing done or cancel, after using the pattern tool. It happens with text and images. These examples are both texts. First example I had the text ' James' typed twice. When exited pattern tool it ate most of the second 'James' text that was brown and filled it with the Noah's ark image.
The second example I had the word Alexander typed twice. Moved one off the art board thinking it only eats motifs on the art board. When exited pattern tool it ate most of the word Alexander which was on the side of the Artboard. This has happened with images as well. Which is frustrating as I didn't have copies of the images and when pressed undone they wouldn't come back? Is this a bug?  Really would like to know why this happens? Thank you

Hi Anshul file was too big to send so sent a screenshot to share with ai.

Hi @shanice24820425yiyc,

Thanks for trying. I saw the screenshot. I am unable to replicate the issue on my end. Would you mind trying resetting Illustrator preferences manually? If that doesn't help, then along with resetting preferences manually, uninstall Illustrator using the CC Cleaner tool & reinstall it again from the Creative Cloud Desktop app.

I hope it helps!

Thanks & regards,
