Anchor points filled with gray

Illustrator 27.0 on a Mac running Ventura 13.0
Anchor points selected with direct selection tool are filled with gray instead of white. Almost impossible to distinguish between individual selected points/path and entire object selected.

I fiddled around with Preferences, to no avail.

Try selecting the objects. Then, click on View > view using CPU) or View using GPU. Do your anchor points turn white again?

"View using GPU" is grayed out.
