Hi, I am new to illustrator and when using the direct selection tool, I must have accidentally used some shortcut to change the function of the tool and now when trying to manipulate text, the anchor points appear as a different color, and the path points do not appear at all. My edges are not hidden in the view window either. How do I get this back to normal? Thanks.

Looks like a stray anchor point to me that you are selecting. When you say you are trying to manipulate text, what do you mean? Did you convert the text to outlines? If not, there is just one anchor point at the beginning of the text to manipulate or the bounding box if you used area type.
