You're using the curvature tool? Setting automatic points is its job description.

Yes, I use curvature most of the time, but this is an example of others that sometimes appear too many points and it bothers me.
Is there anything that can be done or is it really part of the function of this tool?
It's not clear at all what you're doing there.
But just incase you have drawn a path using the pen tool and then later edit it with the curcature tool, what you'll get is automatically added point. Is that what happened?

Yes that is really a function of the tool. It has to auto add points in order to allow the shape or curve you are asking it to display.

You could try to draw with the pen tool instead in order to control the amount of points.
Another option, though it may not work quite the way you want, is to simplify the path located under the Object menu.
