Hello.

It really seems as if there is a fundamental problem with 'smart guides.' Why is Adobe not dealing with it? It's something pretty important to any graphic package.

No matter what I do, no matter how many similar articles I read- none will take me away from a seemingly default 45 degrees. I've read more posts than I care to count and the fact that so many have the same problem suggests that something is really wrong with this programme.

Can anyone suggest any alternatives? I remember this programme from years back- it was more basic but it worked.

Can you describe the issue?

Probably the smart guides rival with a pressed shift key?

Hello Monika, thanks for your reply.

I am trying to draw lines at 30 degree angles. I have gone to EDIT>PREFERENCES>Smart Guides and slected 'construction guides' and it has suggested 0,30.60.90,120,150 degrees- exactly what I was looking for. But it is still stuck on 45 degrees no matter what I do. Yes, I am pressing shift when I try to draw the lines, which is what the help guide told me to do. From what you've just written above, I am going to guess that is not the right thing to do???

I am happy to put in the effort trying to learn myself if you could point me in the direction of a help guide, please? I must admit that- like many others- I am a bit frustrated at the current programme; like Photoshop- for which I used to be a fairly competent user- it has become so complex and lost the ability to easily perform the basics.

Thanks again.

You will get those angles when rotating the object after drawing.

In order to draw shapes at a ertain angle, set the angle in Preferences > General.

Thanks Monika. I do appreciate the further reply, but that still doesn't really tell me what to do.

I am simply trying to draw a basic map of our town for a flyer; but instead of tracing every little bend and curve in each road, I was simplifying it with just roads at certain angles. I can't do that by drawing each line separately, can I?

I'd have hoped I could have done that for the price of this programme. Thanks anyway.

When looking for something, please do always describe the task you want to do. Otherwise you will get too many answers that do not apply to your situation. Drawing that kind of thing with single lines will not make it easier. You want to use the pen tool instead. And the pen tool does respect the Smart guides and their angles.

Derek,

Presuming you draw with the Pen Tool and use corner Anchor Points so you Click rather than ClickDrag esch Anchor Point, what happens if you just place the (Pen) cursor roughly corresponding to one of the 30 degrees angles and move it about until it snaps to the desired Alignment Guide from the latest Anchor Point, then move the (Pen) cursor) along it to the desired spot, and then just Click?
