Apple Magic Mouse scroll will not zoom

I am trying to use the Apple Magic Mouse instead of my non-Apple bluetooth mouse. After switching to the apple mouse, scrolling no longer zooms in AI, and it scrolls the file like scrolling would work in any other application. I am using a brand new IMac, the latest Mac OS and my AI is completely up to date. I have tried the following which I found in other posted comments, and nothing has worked.

• AI Preferences > General > Zoom with mouse scroll is checked
• AI Preferences > General > Zoom with mouse scroll is not checked - same behavior as if checked, opt+scroll zoom works
• Mac Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options > Scrolling speed is fine (mid-high)
• Mac Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Mouse Options > Zoom scroll in AI does not work "with inertia" or "without inertia."
• Mac Settings > Mouse > Point & Click - zoom scroll in AI does not work whether the Mac scroll direction is set to "natural" or not.

I have, of course, tried restarting AI and restarting my computer after messing with the settings. Not sure what else I can try, super frustrated, and I really rather not have to use a second mouse for Adobe products since I insist on scroll zoom.
