Arrow Keys for Polygons not working working properly in Illustrator with Wacom Pen

G'Day. I don't think this is an Illustrator problem/bug but more to do with a Wacom issue, however I'm hoping someone here might have seen this and perhaps offer a solution. First, the data:

iMac Late 2015 Fusion Drive, 32GB RAM, Catalina (latest version); Wacom Cintiq 24 Pro (latest drivers)

Illustrator v24 (latest)

Alright, so in Illustrator, as you drag a polygon or star out, hitting the up/down arrow keys as you drag should increase/decrease the number of points by one with each press of the key. However, with the Wacom Pro Pen 2, each keypress of the arrow key will change the number of points by a variable number. Instead of getting one additonal point, I will get >1. What seems to be happening is instead of the arrow keys giving a single event with each press, it's as though a repeat switch has been enabled somewhere and I'll get multiple presses of the keypress. Very much like if you were to press and hold the arrow key down. The faster I can hit and release the key, the fewer additions/subtractions I get, but I can never get just one (maybe the reflexes ain't what they used to be 🙂 ). Now, if I do the same operation with my trackpad, it works perfectly; thus the reason I believe this is more a Wacom issue. I have replaced the Wacom drivers and talked to Wacom Support but they had no answer to this. Anyway, if anyone else here has seen this happen, can you please drop a line here with some ideas/hints? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Glenn,

Sorry to hear about this. That's definitely not normal. Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling wacom drivers? If not, please remove wacom tablet completely and reinstall latest drivers from  https://www.wacom.com/en-us/support/product-support/drivers

Once the driver is installed, perform the following steps:

  • Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
  • Go to the Privacy tab, select Accessibility and then click the lock icon at the bottom of the dialog box.
  • In the Allow the apps below to control your computer list, ensure that the checkboxes for Wacom component are selected. Also, ensure that any known listed applications are also selected to work correctly with the tablet. For example, Illustrator, Photoshop.

Srishti

Hi Srishti,

Thanks for replying to this. Yes, I followed all those suggestions with no change. As I say, it's only with the Pen that I see this issue. Since I'm not seeing this issue elsewhere I still think it might be a setting that I don't have set correctly but I've been through every Preference (Adobe and Wacom) I can find but nothing seems to work for me. I'm pretty sure this is a Wacom thing or I'd be seeing it with the trackpad as well and/or I'd be seeing more postings on this around the forums. It doesn't really look or behave like an Illustrator issue. I posted here hoping that someone else may have run into this and have an answer but looks like that's not the case. I have been in touch with Wacom but they basically said the same thing - to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. I'll possibly get in touch with them again but I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

Many thanks for getting back to me Srishti. If any ideas come to mind, could you fire them this way please? Really appreciate it.

Glenn
