Artboard zooming diagonally when using mouse wheel

When I zoom using my wheel mouse, the artboard zooms diagonally rather than straight in and out. Is this by design because it can get pretty annoying?

I can't tell by your screenshots but where is your cursor?

My mouse wheel zoom focuses in to my cursor location not the artboard specifically.

D'OH!  I never noticed the correlation. If my cursor is centered, the zoom is centered, otherwise, it goes opposite of the cursor - up/down and left/right.
