Asset Export – Unable to export message – Solution

Using Version 23.1.1 — Today, I experienced this error on one specific file of a handful of similar AI files. Performing the same process on each file: converting a very simple group of artwork into an Asset Export item, exporting SVG and PNG versions with my preferred settings all with great success. When I got to one file in the group, it repeatedly gave me this message while trying to export svg and png alike...

After lots of troubleshooting, the problem was the directory to which I was saving the file. I have no idea what broke or what Illustrator decided not to like about this folder (must be some unseen file going on there), but nothing obvious was the culprit.

Fix: Save to a different folder then move them in manually. Hope this saves another AI pro some time.

Hmmm... what OS are you using? Can you save other files from other apps to that directory? If not, it's likely an OS level permissions issue, but if something like Word can save there, and not Illustrator, I'd submit it as a bug report at https://illustrator.uservoice.com

I'm using MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra - MacBook Pro 2017

I just tested these situations:

Can save other files (AI and TextEdit) into the target directory.

Cannot export assets from the Asset Export window to this directory from a different AI file.

Can export to this directory using other methods from within AI, like File > Export > Export As...

The problem seems to lie in the Asset Export (window) functionality and the commonality is the OS directory, not an individual AI file. So odd.
