Best file format for saving Illustrator files

Engaged ,
Jan 17, 2023 Jan 17, 2023

In the past the go-to way to save illustrator files as .eps when I am using high-res images and graphics, but not sure if it is the best format for both quality and file size. When using photos I tend to go with at least 200-300 resolution and a few of the files would be printing as large as 4' x 8' full color. Any insights would be helpful.

Thanks,

John

.eps format is pretty dated and in more recent Windows updates isn't even supported.

The best format for preserving raster images in a vector format would be PDF.

Best advice is to talk to your specific printer on what format they would prefer for easier workflows.

Some can take native .ai format as it does include a PDF option with that format.

EPS is not a good choice.

Illustrator files are best saved as AI. If you want to place them into a layout directly, save them with PDF compatibility.

As for the resolution, you should discuss that with the print service provider. It depends on several factors. Same goes for PDF options for the delivery file.
