Best Way to Save Web Ads in Illustrator

I had to create ads for a website in three different sizes in Illustrator (that is the only adobe program we have at work). Originally I exported the files as jpegs at 300 dpi. However, when saved with this high resolution, the size of the image changed. When I open the saved file it was no longer at the dimensions I created it to be. For example a 300x250 px ad opened up to be 1000 something by 1000 something px.

If I save the files at 72 dpi, the size stays correct but the image quality is blurrier. Should I instead save the files with the "save for web" option?

I'm not sure what the best way is to save the files at the size they are without losing quality.

you should save at the exact pixel dimensions of the final image you intend to use. you won't 'lose' any quality as the quality is inherent in your required pixel dimensions. just make sure that shapes and paths are aligned to the pixel grid where possible to prevent excessive anti-aliasing.
