blend blurred shapes

I am trying to blend two shapes. Both have gaussian blur. I cant seem to get it to work.  I have options set to smooth colour. Preview is greyed out for some reason also.  First image is the two shapes and second image is result.  Earlier i was getting a different result that showed white corners on each shape. Am i doing something wrong?   Im following this tut - https://www.behance.net/gallery/38202071/TUTORIAL-Realistic(ish)-Cast-Shadows-in-Illustrator

Correct answer Monika Gause

It's mentoned in the tutorial that it doesn't work in newer versions.

If you change to CPU preview, it will work.

You are following the tut correctly. I see the problem.

I would eliminate the Blend step. The shadow will look good without it.

Alternatively, you could have a single shape, fill it with a gradient and add a blur effect.

Thanks I will try that.  But why doesnt the blend tool work with blurred shapes?
