I am trying to blend two shapes. Both have gaussian blur. I cant seem to get it to work.  I have options set to smooth colour. Preview is greyed out for some reason also.  First image is the two shapes and second image is result.  Earlier i was getting a different result that showed white corners on each shape. Am i doing something wrong?   Im following this tut - https://www.behance.net/gallery/38202071/TUTORIAL-Realistic(ish)-Cast-Shadows-in-Illustrator

You are following the tut correctly. I see the problem.  I would eliminate the Blend step. The shadow will look good without it. Alternatively, you could have a single shape, fill it with a gradient and add a blur effect.

It's mentoned in the tutorial that it doesn't work in newer versions. If you change to CPU preview, it will work.
