Blend Options and Holes Not Working

Hi! I was using Blend Mode to make a sort of 3D look with these letters. For some reason, the holes in the f and g are completely white but the g looks just fine. Any ideas?

Maybe far too far out, what happens if you (deselect everything by clicking an empty spot, then) Click on the fill of each of the non counters (non holes) with the Direct Select Tool (V) and press Delete?

I figured it out! I changedmy layers from Groups to Compound Paths!

For refernce, these are the old layers (messy, I know):

The only thing is that the gradients got a little messed up. I wanted the pink to be on top of all the letters regardless of height. This fix works if you're not picky about your gradients. I'm going to do it letter by letter, but I still don’t know why those holes weren't working. Thank you!
