Blend tool not blending from center

I've got 3 blended objects that I want to blend with each other to create a halftone effect. Each object is a straight line of squares set to specified distance. The center squares of all 3 objects line up. When I go to blend those three objects together, they're not blending from the center square which gives me the appearance of diagonal blend paths. Can someone help me understand why they're not blending from the center? You can see in the image that for some reason the very bottom 2 rows line up correctly under the diagonal rows.

You can check the number of objects (some may be hiding behind others) in each column by selecting the column and choosing Selection Only and Objects in the Document Info panel.

Interestingly, I was able to reproduce this in one document but failed when I tried it in a second. So it does happen, without any excess objects, but I haven't yet worked out what variables are in play. I'll keep plugging at it until  I or someone else figures it out, or it becomes obvious to me that it's beyond my ken.

I tried to reproduce it and I could. I found the difference in the number of objects (I don't know how that happened) to be causing this. That's why I suggested checking the number of objects.

Is it the same number of objects in each column?

All in the same stacking order?

Yes same number of objects.

In the first screenshot you can see 3 vertical columns of squares made with the blend tool. The left and right columns were duplicated from the center column. Then I adjusted the size of the center square in the left and right columns to create a uniform blend of 5pt squares.

The problem happens on a 2000pt x 2000pt artboard. Strangely, the problem goes away when I do the exact same process on a 1000pt x 1000pt artboard.

For reference: I started with a 50pt square in the center and a 5pt square for the top and bottom with a blend mode of specified distance of  55pt. Works on 1000 x 1000 artboard, but not 2000 x 2000.

Are you sure you are doing the exact same thing?

If it continues, then why don't you first create it on the small artboard, then expand and scale it to the needed size?
