Blob brush not working- greyed out

I jumped from Pro-create to Adobe without any classes. Big mistake, lol. I do not know much terminology, so when I was reading about someone else who had the same issue, I still didn't understand how to fix this:

The blob brush and other brushes won't work; they are grayed out and unable to use. I need to use the blob brush because I am sick and tired of the eraser tool erasing chunks instead of clean strokes. Can someone SLOWLY and SIMPLY walk me through how to fix this?

First of all you need to check if the layers are locked. Open the Layers panel to do so.

If the layers are unlocked, open the Brushes panel and check if there are brushes in them (other than "Basic")

Maybe you opened a JPEG or PNG to draw. Don't do that.

Instead create a new file and then File > Place the template.
