Blue Box with an X over new files imported

How do I get rid of a blue box -with a blue X in it - that surrounds files that I have dragged and dropped or placed into illustrator?

It is an indication that the link has been placed on the blue layer and has no effect on printing or exporting. If you simply think that the display is in the way, you can hide it with the overprint preview.
