Brush definition

Is there any way that I can draw, using the paintbrush tool, while my brush definition is on basic? If I set my brush definition to basic and then try to draw a line, my line immediately returns to one of the stroke point options instead. However, after I draw a line with the paintbrush, I am able to click on the line and then change its brush definition to basic. I hope I am explaining correctly.

"Basic" is not a brush. It deletes all brushes. But the brush tool cannot draw without a brush. If you want to draw freeform, but don't want a brush, then use the pencil tool.

Check the appearance panel and make the basic stroke the default appearance. Also check which brush is actually selected in the brush preset palette, not just the tool settings.
