Brush tool: Stroke becomes thick immediately after drawing stroke.

So when I use my brush tool, after I finish drawing a thin stroke, it immediately becomes thick.  Also even though I have the fill option off, it creates a white fill.  How can I fix this?

Try: Opening the appearance panel, and clicking the Clear Appearance icon at the bottom
