Question

CAD elements not showing once imported

Hi All -  I have a large CAD drawing that has a variety of xrefs in that I need to replicate in Illustrator.  I appreciate that I will need to import each CAD xref in separately, I have taken one CAD file and saved it as a 2007 version and imported that into Illustrator 2019.  The elements are showing on the layers lists, however they do not display on the artboard.  I've selected the elements and changed the line type and colour to something large and prominent, but they are still not visible.

I have little experience in Illustrator so have I missed something when in importing, or is there something else that I need to do?

Thank you for your comments - It was that the files were the wrong size and not showing up.  When I imported and scaled to Artboard they showed up ok.  I was reluctant to do this as I am doing a variety of CAD files and was concerned about them all scaling up different sizes so I would be unable to combine them all together and they all sit in the correct location.

Try exporting your CAD as a .dxf file. Then open the .dxf in Illustrator.

Does that work? It works for our Artios CAD files.

Hi,

Please confirm the version of illustrator and operating system you are using.

Consider adding screenshots to help us understand better your issue, especially in this case of the CAD export settings you selected.

In the past, I had similar issues as the CAD drawings imported too large or too small and was impossible to find.

One work around I would suggest is this: print/plot your CAD file as a PDF and open that in illustrator. The advantage here is that your pen assignment will be applied and the lines thicknesses will be represented correctly in illustrator. The downside is that you might loose some of the layering (I seem to remember there was an export option to keep the layering in PDF).

Otherwise, check the scaling you are exporting at, that could be a cause of the issue.

You can also bind all the Xrefs in a copy of you CAD file to make only one export, you can test different export file formats like eps, cad, dxfs...

Let us know what worked best for you. Other users have posted similar issues on this forum and you should find an answer that suits you
