I'm having the same problem. Can you tell me step by step how you fixed this without having to create the entire artwork over again?

Press Ctrl+A and go to Object>Ungroup

but be sure that all layers or objects are unlocked

( you can make this by checking the layer panel  or go to Object> Unlock All)

I'm having a similar issue working on a logo. In Illustrator I can clearly see all the layers, but when I export as a different file type (all of these -- .gif, .png, .bmp, & .svg), then open the new file, all the elements are grouped as one, and I can't click on the elements individually any more. I'm getting close to my deadline, and I'm freaking out. Anybody??

The first three file formats you listed are all raster formats and are all a single layer of pixels only. You can only select the entire image. An SVG file can have selectable objects.

Thank you, Larry. That is pretty much what I thought, but It's happening even when I export the Ai file as an .svg . SVG is my format of choice for what I'm doing, and I started with that. I only tried the other formats because, altho all objects were individually selectable in Ai, when I exported from Ai as an .svg then opened it in the software I need to use, even the svg exported as a  single group, and only none of the objects are selectable. Knowing that, do you have any other suggestions? I've been working on this project for 1 week today, and I'm completely out of ideas, and can't move forward if I can't have all the objects selectable. Any other thoughts are very appreciated. Thank you again. I work on a 4 yr. old Mac desktop.

I forgot to tell you when I try to import the file svg file (exported out ofAi), into my cutter software, it imports everything but the text. The objects are selectable, but I have no text. I've never had this problem. Thanks again.

Have you tried outlining the fonts before Exporting as a svg? Make a copy of your AI file and try that. I don’t have a lot of experience with the svg format but it can’t hurt to try.
