I am currently using Illustrator CS6 on a PC but I might be moving to a MAC in the near future and I was wondering if the new version (Illustrator CC) can open native CorelDraw files?
Basically I want to be able to open the files by bypassing CorelDraw altogether.
I am currently running CorelDraw X6.
Thanks
I had success in past with CS6 opening CDR, unless the .cdr file contains an offending element. Simplifying the .cdr in Corel Draw prior to opening will give you less issues, such as removing elements you do not need on the pastebaord, or simplifying to basic fills.
You can then try

Illustrator will open CDR up to version 10.
You might have better success exporting your files as AI from CorelDraw as long as you still have it installed.

Thanks for the responses...
I tried the on-line conversion tool Zamzar and it worked almost perfectly but unfortunately I would only see this as a temporary solution.
I noticed as well that Illustrator only supports CorelDraw 10 and earlier.
Since I want to to move to a MAC in my organisation I have to find a solution in which I do not have to access CorelDraw...most of the native files I receive are in CorelDraw format.
Thanks

The older the .cdr file the easier for Illustrator to handle , as some of the newer features Corel added will not allow you to open the .cdr in ilustrator.
The best path to go may not be a combination of methods, including batch converting .cdr to .ai and individual file conversion when you have issues. Sounds like you want to not have to open corel draw anymore and probably get rid of the PC.
Have not used this link before, so create a restore point prior to installing.

Hi, the best way to solve your problem is to open CorelDraw files in CorelDraw, then export them as an Adobe Illustrator files.
Adobe illustrator can open CorelDraw files from version 5 to version 10 only.
some times we need to install programs that we don't use just to finalize our work process in an efficient way.
I wish my answer was helpful.
Thank you

When you say that they can only convert files from version 5 to version 10, does that mean that none of the versions from the year 2000 on can be converted?

Exactly.

Yes Adobe Illustrator CC cannot open native CorelDRAW (CDR) files. First you need to turn them into PDF EPS or SVG using CorelDRAW.

This is an ages old thread.
EPS would be an absolute horrible choice. But PDF and SVG won't be that much better.
CorelDRAW can export AI files.

If you HAVE CorelDraw, you can just export it as .AI format from there and avoid all that. Best approach, really.
