Question

Can Illustrator flag embedded images over a certain dpi?

We have recently come across art that was sent with an embedded image at 3600dpi and it crashed our RIP when sending to press.  Without having to dig into each linked/embedded image, is there a way for Illustrator to flag those images so we can reduce?

When saving as pdf you can automatically reduce the ppi.

Can you elaborate?  I have tried that and can get the overall file size down, but when I open it the images still maintain their resolution.

When you send it to your rip you probably only send the pdf without Illustrator editing capabilities. And saving the PDF with the right downsampling settings will reduce images.

Peobably scripts could also do it, but Astute Graphics FindReplace Art can. It's a commercial third party plugin.
